1. Acceptance
These terms govern your use of Gnorium: the website at gnorium.com and everything it offers, wherever in the world you use it from. By using Gnorium, or by creating an account, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use Gnorium.
They work together with the Privacy Policy, the Cookie Policy and the Editorial Policy, which explain how we handle personal data and cookies and how records are made.
2. Who operates Gnorium
Gnorium is operated by Madhavik Dogra, an individual who lives in India. It is not run by a company. In these terms, “we”, “us” and “our” mean the operator, and “you” means anyone who uses Gnorium. The Legal Notice gives the operator's contact details.
3. Eligibility and accounts
Anyone may read Gnorium without an account. To contribute, you need an account, and you must be at least 18 years old to create one.
- You can register with an email address and a password, or continue with Google. Either way, you choose a username of 3–20 characters (lowercase letters, digits and underscores). Your username is shown publicly beside everything you contribute. Don't choose one that impersonates someone else or is offensive.
- Give an email address that is yours and that you can read. We use it to verify your account and to send you a link to reset your password if you forget it.
- You are responsible for keeping your password secret and for what is done with your account. Don't share your account or use someone else's.
- If you choose to stay signed in, anyone who uses that browser can act as you, so don't do this on a shared device. Changing or resetting your password signs you out everywhere else.
- If you think someone else has used your account, change your password and tell us at info@gnorium.com.
4. Your contributions and their license
A contribution is anything you submit to Gnorium: a folksong (a testament—a source's page images with their bibliographic details—or a sentiment—a sense of a word with the passages that attest it), a revision, an amendment, a locution or a reaction.
- You keep whatever rights you have in your contributions.
- You license each contribution to the public under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license (CC BY-SA 4.0), and you agree to be credited by your username.
- You also grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual and irrevocable right to host, store, reproduce, publish, adapt (for example to edit, format, translate or combine it with other material) and distribute each contribution, in any medium, as part of Gnorium. Our service providers may do the same on our behalf, only to run Gnorium.
- Creative Commons licenses can't be withdrawn. If you delete a contribution or close your account later, anyone who received it under that license may keep using it on its terms.
- Contributions are public. They show your username and when you made them, and Gnorium keeps a history of every vignette of a record. Once a contribution becomes part of a record, it stays in that record's history.
- What you submit may be reviewed, changed, combined with other material or turned down, as the Editorial Policy describes. It is also processed by AI models, including models run by third-party providers, to attribute, explicate, explicate or translate it (see section 9 and the Privacy Policy).
- Contributions are voluntary and unpaid.
5. Rights in source material
Evidence carries someone else's work: images of a book, a manuscript or another source, and passages from it. Gnorium collects works that are in the public domain. When you submit a source, you confirm that it is in the public domain, and that making images of it and sharing them is lawful.
- Describe your sources honestly. Don't invent a source, or knowingly misstate its title, authors, date or any other detail.
- You are responsible for what you submit, and for making sure that submitting it doesn't break the law or anyone's rights.
- If you hold rights in material on Gnorium and believe it is there without permission, tell us as section 8 describes.
6. Conduct
When you use Gnorium, don't:
- submit anything you know to be false or misleading, including invented sources, altered images or made-up quotations;
- infringe anyone's copyright, trademark, privacy or other rights;
- harass, threaten, insult or impersonate anyone, or publish someone's personal information without their consent;
- post material that is obscene, sexually explicit, harmful to children, defamatory, or that promotes hatred or violence against people for who they are;
- post anything that is unlawful where you live or in India, where Gnorium is operated, or that incites violence or threatens public order or a country's security;
- post advertising or spam, or use locutions and reactions for anything but the object they are on;
- create more than one account to get round a suspension, or to make a view look more widely held than it is;
- upload malicious code, try to break into or test the security of Gnorium, get round its limits, or access it by automated means in a way that burdens it.
Disagree with evidence and arguments, not with people. A locution should help decide the object it is on.
7. Moderation and enforcement
- Moderators and editors can hide a locution that breaks these terms. Hiding is reversible: a hidden locution can be shown again.
- You can delete your own locutions. Once an object is permitted into a record, its locutions are frozen: nobody can add, edit or delete them, though a moderator can still hide or show them.
- We may remove any contribution that breaks these terms or the law, and we act on valid orders of courts and government authorities as the law requires.
- We may suspend or close an account for a serious breach or for repeated breaches. While an account is suspended, it can't be used to contribute. Where we can, we will tell you why, and you can ask us to review the decision by writing to info@gnorium.com.
We don't review everything that is posted, and we aren't obliged to. We rely on the editorial process and on reports from readers.
8. Complaints and takedown requests
Anyone, with or without an account, can ask us to review content: because it infringes their copyright or other rights, because it is unlawful, because it breaks these terms, or because it concerns them personally. Write to info@gnorium.com and include:
- the address of the page and the content you mean;
- what is wrong with it, and, for a rights claim, the work or right concerned and your connection to it;
- how we can reach you.
We acknowledge every complaint within 24 hours and resolve it within 15 days. Where content is unlawful or infringes someone's rights, we remove it or disable access to it. We tell you what we decided and why. If a contribution of yours is removed after a complaint, we tell you, where we can, and you can ask us to reconsider.
Complaints about these terms, or about how we have handled your account or your personal data, go to the same address and are handled on the same timetable.
9. Machine-produced content
Much of Gnorium is drafted by AI models: explication (reading the text in a source's images), explication (writing senses, definitions and notes) and translation. This work is bylined “By gnorium”, and a person decides whether it enters a record.
- Machine-produced content can be wrong, incomplete or out of date, even after people have reviewed it. We give no warranty that it is accurate.
- We publish the provenance of this content, such as the model used, its reasoning and its stated confidence, so that you can see how it was reached and check it. We publish it for transparency, not as a guarantee. We never edit a model's output to make it look more certain than the model said it was.
- Check the cited sources before you rely on machine-produced content, and don't rely on it where a mistake could cause harm.
- To the extent that anyone holds rights in it, machine-produced content is made available under the same license as the rest of Gnorium's content (see section 10).
10. Intellectual property
- Content: unless it is marked otherwise, the content on Gnorium is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. You may share and adapt it for any purpose, commercial purposes included, if you credit Gnorium and its contributors (a link to the page you used and “CC BY-SA 4.0”) and license what you make under the same terms. Works in the public domain stay in the public domain; the license adds no restriction to them.
- Software: the software that runs Gnorium, including its code, design and interface, is proprietary. It is © 2025–2026 Madhavik Dogra, all rights reserved, and it is not covered by the content license. Don't copy, revise or reverse-engineer it, except where the law allows you to.
- Trademark: Gnorium™ and the Gnorium logo are trademarks of Madhavik Dogra. The content license gives no right to use them. You may use the name to refer to Gnorium truthfully, for example when you credit it, but not in a way that suggests we endorse you, or as the name of your own product or service.
11. Fees
Gnorium is free to use. If we introduce paid features, such as credits for machine processing, the terms for them will be presented before you pay, and they will form part of these terms.
12. Privacy
The Privacy Policy explains what personal data we collect, why, who else receives it, and what you can ask us to do with it. The Cookie Policy explains the cookies Gnorium uses, including the one that keeps you signed in. Remember that your username and your contributions are public.
13. Termination
- You can stop using Gnorium at any time. To close your account, write to info@gnorium.com from the email address on it.
- When an account is closed, it can no longer be used to sign in. Its public contributions remain on Gnorium, credited to its username, under the licenses in section 4. Your personal data is handled as the Privacy Policy describes.
- We may suspend or close an account as section 7 describes. We may also stop offering Gnorium, in whole or in part; where we can, we will give reasonable notice.
- Sections 4, 5, 9, 10, 14, 15 and 16 continue to apply after an account is closed.
14. Disclaimers
Gnorium is provided “as is” and “as available”. As far as the law allows, we make no promise that it is accurate, complete or up to date, that it suits any particular purpose, that it doesn't infringe anyone's rights, or that it will be available without interruption or errors.
Contributions are the responsibility of the people who made them, and showing them on Gnorium doesn't mean we endorse them. Links to other websites are given for convenience; we don't control those sites and aren't responsible for them. Gnorium is a scholarly reference, not professional advice.
15. Limitation of liability
Gnorium is run by one person and offered free of charge, so, as far as the law allows, our liability is limited as follows.
- We are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for any loss of data, profit, revenue or goodwill, that arises from your use of Gnorium or your inability to use it, from its content, or from the conduct of other users.
- Our total liability to you for all claims connected with Gnorium is limited to the greater of US$10 or the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim (currently nothing, as Gnorium charges no fees).
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that the law of the country you live in doesn't allow to be limited or excluded. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the mandatory law of the country you live in.
16. Governing law and disputes
These terms, and any dispute about them or about Gnorium, are governed by the law of India, where Gnorium's operator lives.
- If you have a dispute with us, please write to info@gnorium.com first. We will try to resolve it with you informally, and most disagreements can be settled this way.
- If it can't be resolved informally, the courts of India have jurisdiction. If you use Gnorium as a consumer, you may also bring a claim in the courts of the country you live in, where its law gives you that right.
17. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms, for example when Gnorium changes or the law does. When we do, we will update the date at the top of this page. If a change is significant, we will give reasonable notice before it takes effect, on Gnorium and by email to account holders. If you keep using Gnorium after a change takes effect, you accept the new terms; if you don't accept them, stop using Gnorium and close your account.
18. Contact
For questions about these terms, write to info@gnorium.com.
