It is now more than a quarter of a century since the first edition of the present work was published. It was hardly possible for me to ascertain, at that date, that the time of its publication was not a very favourable one ; it would, perhaps, have been better to have deferred its appearance for a few years, owing to the great advances that were being made, just at that period, in the methods of comparative philology. The whole system of estimating the vowel-sounds has since been com-pletely reconsidered, and the history of their phonetic values, in particular, is now regarded in a very different light.The chief writers on philology of that period, notably Curtius, Fick, Schleicher, and Vaniček agreed in the view, now known to be erroneous, that the primitive IndogermanicIndo-Germanic language had but three short primary vowels, viz.videlicet a, i, and u. This strange theory (for such we should now consider it) arose from the fact that the short primary vowels really were reduced to these three both in Gothic, which was justly regarded as being, upon the whole, the most primitive of the Teutonic (or Germanic) languages, and in Sanskrit, which was likewise known to possess many characteristics of extreme antiquity. But it is now recognized that more than half of the IndogermanicIndo-Germanic languages retain a primitive e, whilst just half of them retain a primitive o ; so that the number of primary short vowels was really five, viz.videlicet a, e, i, o, u. The primitive form corresponding to the Gk.Greek -τε, L.Latin -que, Skt.Sanskrit cha, signifying ‘and,’ must have been *que, rather than *qua, because the Skt.Sanskrit ch is a palatal sound, due to the palatal vowel e, which once followed it. In other words, the Skt.Sanskrit cha was once *che.The advance due to the following up of this discovery (for it was nothing less) has been very considerable. The whole subject has been thoroughly revised, and the results are fully exhibited in the Comparative Grammar of the IndogermanicIndo-Germanic Languages by Karl Brugmann ; as well as in the special German, Dutch, and Danish Etymological Dictionaries by Kluge, Franck, and Falk and Torp respectively. It is needless to add that the same correct principles have been adopted in the New English Dictionary.Owing to the large number of corrections which the use of the newer method renders imperative, I took the opportunity, in 1901, of printing an entirely new edition of my Concise Etymological Dictionary, first issued in 1882, and partially corrected in four later editions ; the result being that the edition of 1901 entirely supersedes all that preceded it.The time has now arrived when it has become absolutely necessary, in the same way, to reprint my larger Dictionary also. Alterations have now been made, more or less, in almost every article except such as are of the simplest character.Not only have the methods of comparative philology been greatly improved, but many valuable works on special subjects have appeared in recent years, as, for example, those by Kluge, Franck, Falk, Prellwitz, Bréal, Walde, Uhlenbeck, Godefroy, Hatzfeld, and others ; not one of these was avail-able in 1879–82. PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION
The present work was undertaken with the intention of furnishing students with materials for a more scientific study of English etymology than is commonly to be found in previous works upon the subject. It is not intended to be always authoritative, nor are the conclusions arrived at to be accepted as final. It is rather intended as a guide to future writers, showing them in some cases what ought certainly to be accepted, and in other cases, it may be, what to avoid. The idea of it arose out of my own wants. I could find no single book containing the facts about a given word which it most concerns a student to know, whilst, at the same time, there exist numerous books containing informa-tion too important to be omitted. Thus Richardson’s Dictionary is an admirable store-house of quotations illustrating such words as are of no great antiquity in the language, and his selected examples are the more valuable from the fact that he in general adds the exact reference1. Todd’s Johnson likewise contains numerous well-chosen quotations, but perhaps no greater mistake was ever made than that of citing from authors like ‘Dryden’ or ‘Addison’ at large, without the slightest hint as to the whereabouts of the context. But in both of these works the etymology is commonly of the poorest description ; and it would probably be difficult to find a worse philologist than Richardson, who adopted many suggestions from Horne Tooke without inquiry, and was capable of saying that hod is ‘perhaps hoved, hov’d, hod, past part.participle of heafan to heave.’ It is easily ascertained that the AS.Anglo-Saxon for heave is hebban, and that, being a strong verb, its past participle did not originally end in -ed.It would be tedious to mention the numerous other books which help to throw such light on the history of words as is necessary for the right investigation of their etymology. The great defect of most of them is that they do not carry back that history far enough, and are very weak in the highly important Middle-English period. Never write a margin that stands for the page's margin or centers a block (center with align(center)); everything the page holds—marginalia, stamps, call numbers included—is set inside the frame. A page taller than the frame is fitted by shrinking its large vertical gaps, never by scaling its type.
• Geometry is the tools': never write coordinates, a <facsimile>, a <zone> or facs; only a figure's or a decorated initial's bbox.
• One page-em is the page's width ÷ 40. In a style, em is the element's own font size; a font-size in em multiplies its parent's. A unitless line-height is pitch ÷ the element's computed size.
• Sizes, line-heights, letter-spacing, word-spacing, indents and gaps are measured style on the block or <hi>: font-size 0.5em–4em of the page as the cascade computes it, not only as written (0.6em inside a 0.7em block is 0.42em, a layout finding), line-height 0.75–3, letter-spacing, word-spacing and text-indent (may be negative), margin-block-start/-end, margin-inline-start/-end, padding, column-gap, inline-size, border-style, and block-size for a printed frame's height. Alignment, ink (color(NAME), one of pink, red, orange, brown, yellow, olive, yellow-green, green, blue, purple, white, gray, black) and typeface class (roman, italic, blackletter, script, sans-serif, typewriter) are rend tokens. Style cascades as CSS: the body's shared style once on its <div>, overrides on its children.
• A blank between blocks is margin-block-start, or <space dim="vertical" quantity="N" unit="lines"/> (N whole, 1–128) or quantity="1.5" unit="em" (decimal); a gap within a line a horizontal <space unit="chars"/> or a length.
• A printed rule is <milestone unit="section" rend="rule"/> (its measure inline-size); a printed frame border-style with padding on the block it encloses. Running heads and page numbers on one line are consecutive <fw>s with no <lb/> between them. Footnotes are a <note place="foot"> with a <cb/> at each column and its column-gap. Small capitals are lowercase letters inside <hi rend="smallcaps">. A paragraph or division continued across pages is part="I", "M" or "F"; a <cb/> inside a block continues it. A contents page is a <table type="contents">: label, numeral (align(right)), title and page cells, main entries spanning cols, dot leaders as printed in one <pc> with a letter-spacing, PAGE a <row role="label">, a continuation line inside its title cell. Bleed-through is left out.
EDITING THE MARKUP
1. Correct the draft with edit_tei: every correction in one call, each locator an exact span that occurs once in the draft as it stands; if one edit fails, none is applied. read_tei reads it by line.
2. validate_tei the draft (no tei). On a canvas with its image it returns the validators' findings and three whole-page images—the scan registered as the reader's overlay lays it, the render, and the overlay—and layout_measure: scan and render measured line by line in page-em, blocks paired in reading order ("lines S · R | pitch S · R | width S · R … | unregistered scan: pitch P, line height H, measure W; render line height R"), each line's Δtop Δheight Δleft Δright with Δ = render − scan. The registration fits the scan's content box to the render's one axis at a time, so it stretches: judge type size and pitch against the unregistered values, never the registered rows. Set the layout from the numbers: line counts first (a lineation finding is a missing, merged or extra <lb/>), then font-size × unregistered line height ÷ render line height, line-height = unregistered pitch ÷ computed size, a jump in Δtop → a gap, width → letter-spacing on unjustified lines. The placement line ("content top S · R below the frame's top | Δ …") is the page's drop, set as a vertical <space> before the first block; its scan figure includes the scan's own head margin, so read it against the work's body pages, not against 0. Up to three regions per draft, with a reason, show the scan and render side by side. A frame finding ("the render is N em taller than the page") blocks layout_ok until the large vertical gaps are shrunk to fit, never the type; a refusal that "a line is N em wider than the frame's measure" means narrowing letter-spacing, word-spacing or margins; an "ink at the image's … edge" finding does not block, and what runs past the edge is encoded as <gap reason="cropped" extent="N" unit="chars|words|lines"/>, never supplied.
On a call in translation there is no image: validate_tei runs the validators only, and zoom_image has nothing to read.
3. Confirm: validate_tei with layout_ok=true and the review_token of this exact draft, with lineation_judgment where a lineation finding stands because the measurement is wrong (a stain, handwriting across printed lines). Any edit afterwards voids it.
4. suggest_revision with use_confirmed_draft: true and the markup field left out of fields (fields {} where nothing else changes): it files the draft last confirmed with layout_ok, as it stands, as markup (translated-markup on a call in translation). Prefer it to retyping the page. It is refused where nothing is confirmed or the draft was edited since ("there is no confirmed draft to file"), where fields also gives the markup field, and on a quotation. Otherwise the markup field (translated-markup in translation) is a JSON string mapping the evidence id to the page, {"<evidence id>": "<the draft>"}, refused unless it is the confirmed draft byte for byte. Either way the page is filed only without a layout finding, and only the selected canvas can be rewritten.
ANNOTATION AND PAGE IMAGE TOOLS
You judge the annotation; the tools give evidence, never answers, and their output is never copied into the TEI unexamined. check_annotation returns an independent tagger's (Stanza's) disagreements with type, lemma and msd, its confidence unreliable, and checks xml:lang by sentence and inline span. check_consistency compares the draft's readings of each form in three tiers, each weaker evidence than the one before: this witness's permitted pages (this canvas's own excluded, the draft standing in for it), its records type, lemma, msd, feature and lemma_form; the work's other witnesses (other_witnesses); and the site, other works' readings with the lexicographic records of each (site), the last two for type, lemma and msd only. Judge every record. lookup_morphology (UniMorph), identify_language (fastText's lid.176: the three likeliest languages; weak on short text and names), segment (ICU word boundaries) and expand_abbreviation (expansions in hand-checked TEI) are lookups. segment_lines (Kraken's lines, handwriting too), detect_regions (SAM 2's non-text regions) and ocr_lines (segment_lines' lines, each read by PaddleOCR and by Kraken with CATMuS-Print: its paddleocr and kraken readings and their agreement; not_read, the languages an engine has no model for) read the page image: where both engines agree and the markup differs, read the scan again; the scan decides. None of them is ever written into the TEI. A tool that answers that it "is not available right now", or fails, is not running: proceed on your own judgment.
